As various programs flood our televisions with showing actors portraying corrupt characters, abusing their power, being deceitful, greedy, betraying trust, in homosexual relations, etc…(you get the picture). There has been much debate among Christians if we should watch these shows. Some Christians have even questioned their peer’s salvation by suggesting they’re not saved if they are watching these types of programs.
I’m not here to say which television programs one should or shouldn’t watch. Does the media manipulate, stereotype and deceive? Absolutely. However, I believe it’s a personal conviction. What may convict you, may not convict someone else and it doesn’t mean they’re any less of a Christian, nor does it make you a “better” one for not watching.
Shoot, I watch murder mysteries, the Investigation Discovery channel, Snapped, etc…, but I haven’t hatched a plan to kill anyone. If all it takes is for a person to watch a show where there’s infidelity, killing, cursing, or any type of negativity, to cause them to commit the same act… Welllll…. my guess would be, they have bigger issues then any television show.
The Body of Christ can be extremely hypocritical. On the one hand they fight against each other over semantics instead of fighting against the companies who produce shows Christians feel are negative and not representing the “good.” …And on the other hand, Christians as a whole are not consistently supportive with their voices towards positive programs too keep them on the air .
It’s funny how some Christians get in an uproar about paid actors portraying fictional characters on the big screen, but quiet as a church mouse about the REAL LIFE scandals taking place every week in their local houses of worship, and in their everyday lives for that matter.
In any event, these debates from Christians regarding this topic, got me to thinking about the following real life scandals which took place, well before any t.v. shows.
There was this dude named David. He had the ‘hots’ for his neighbor. She was gorgeous, but she was also married. As a matter of fact, David knew her husband! David didn’t care and it didn’t stop him from lusting, having sex with her and getting her pregnant! He was so ruthless about the ordeal, he plotted “How to Get Away with Murder” by having her husband killed!
Oh wait! Here’s another scandal. This is a good one. I’m thinking about this guy Nebuchadnezzar, who was extremely arrogant and prideful. This dude was so full himself, he thought he was God! He built a golden image to himself and commanded the people when they heard the sound of the instruments play in symphony, to fall down and bow in worship to his image. He had the balls and the audacity to establish what he considered to be his own “Empire”!
Then there’s our dear brother Abraham, the father of many nations, who got caught up in some “baby mama” drama. There was a divine promise made to his wife Sarah that she would indeed have his child one day even though she was beyond child barring years. Unfortunately, his wife didn’t believe in the promise and took matters into her own hands. She told Abraham to have sex with another woman. Abraham then had relations with the other woman, Hagar, who then bore him a son, but he wasn’t the promise child. Hagar, who we would consider a “baby mamma” in today’s culture, mocked Sarah for being barren. Sarah wasn’t feeling Hagar or her child, and told Abraham, “Hagar and her child gotta go! Period. Abraham, sent Hagar & his son packing! Thus leaving the baby mama alone and his son without a father.
Listen. You never have to watch another T.V. program again.
You can find the above mentioned scandals and many more right where I found them. In THE BIBLE.
